Shawn Pfaffman

Pianist, organist, vocalist, and composer Shawn Pfaffman has spent a lifetime exploring the place where jazz meets the blues, and where sophisticated music still feels like home.

​

Raised in Demopolis, Alabama, Pfaffman’s musical language was shaped by the sounds of the South: Mississippi blues, Memphis soul, gospel harmony, New Orleans rhythm, Southern rock and country, and the improvisational freedom of jazz. He brings those influences together in a style he calls Southern Jazz.

At the center of his sound are the instruments that first made him fall in love with music: the acoustic piano and Hammond organ. Whether performing on a concert grand, his 1947 Hammond B2, or a simple piano in an intimate room, Pfaffman approaches the instrument as both storyteller and improviser.

His repertoire moves freely between original compositions, jazz and blues standards, and unexpected interpretations of songs by artists ranging from Thelonious Monk and Ray Charles to Stevie Wonder, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, and the Allman Brothers. A familiar song might become a hard-bop workout, a slow Southern blues, a gospel-infused ballad, or something entirely new in the moment.

That accessibility is intentional. Pfaffman believes music can be sophisticated without being exclusive. A great melody can reach a lifelong jazz listener and someone hearing jazz for the first time. The blues can be simple and profound at the same time.

His original compositions reflect that philosophy, music he sometimes describes as “Simple Sophistication.” Melody, harmony, rhythm, improvisation, and storytelling all serve a larger purpose: creating a genuine connection with the listener.

Over a career spanning decades, Pfaffman has performed in clubs, concert halls, listening rooms, festivals, private communities, and international venues. His recent work has included solo piano and vocal concerts, Hammond organ performances, original recordings, a TEDxJacksonville appearance, and an international solo performance in Antwerp, Belgium.

But the setting has never mattered as much as the connection.

Pfaffman has watched music bring strangers together, awaken memories, inspire young musicians, and create moments of joy in places ranging from jazz rooms to senior communities. Those experiences have reinforced a philosophy that has gradually become the center of his work:

Music doesn’t have to separate us by genre, generation, culture, or background. It can be a bridge.

And underneath all of it—blues, jazz, soul, improvisation, and song—is one simple message:

Love.
